Why I started Mystic Charms.
I strongly believe that you can do almost anything if you really want to. It’s how I brought my children up. I always told them “if you want to do something, give it a go, you just never know what will happen”. Not trying is to have failed, and I’m a living example of that.
People are always telling me I have courage and determination and it is those qualities that helped me over come a series of set backs. After finding the courage to stand up against my husband and walk away from an abusive marriage, I found myself living in a homeless hostel with my three beautiful children. At that time I thought I had hit rock bottom but serveral years later I was diagnosed with a rare debilitating medical condition which contributed to me being estranged from my young teenage son for four years. Then after surviving brain surgery and meningitis I had to pull myself back from rock bottom after finding myself all alone with no purpose in life and unable to return to employment.
It was in 1998 my life took a turn for the worse, and after eighteen months of unexplained and worrying symptoms I was finally diagnosed with a rare brain condition that was slowly paralysing me from the neck down. At the same time my 12 yr son became worryingly depressed and withdrawn and went to live with his father. It was almost another four years before I would see him again because of the rift between his dad and me.
As my health and mobility worsened I was told my only option was life saving neuro surgery. By the time I was to finally have surgery I was barely able to walk around my own home, the smallest of tasks were so difficult and if the operation wasn’t a success the outcome for me was total paralysis.
The operation was to take eight long gruelling hours and as I was taken down to surgery I wasn’t afraid, I knew I would be ok. As soon as I woke from the operation, I knew it had been a success, I already felt different. But that was to be short lived. Four days later the nurse noticed that my wound was infected and instead of improving I developed a temperature, vomiting and increasing pain. Tests showed I had developed aggressive and often deadly bacterial meningitis.
The doctors spent the next seven days regularly siphoning off spinal fluid to ease the swelling around my brain. I was put on a rapid and aggressive treatment of life saving intravenous antibiotics and began to resemble a pin cushion with all the injections they were giving me. I remained in critical condition for the next seven days and then suddenly my blood pressure soared to 200/200 and I was at risk of having a stroke, my family were summoned to my bedside, it was touch and go for a while.
I am a fighter, and slowly I began to beat the infection, although still very ill, at least the lumbar punctures could be stopped. After twenty eight days, I was finally allowed home, although still very weak, the infection was under control. I longed for the peace and coolness of my own bed but that was to be short lived. The following morning the doctor, concerned about my lethargy and lack of consciousness, called an ambulance and I found myself being blue lighted back into hospital. Half way to hospital the ambulance had to pull over as my blood pressure had dropped so low that my brain was being starved of oxygen. This was the only time that I felt like giving up, my veins were closing down and the paramedic struggled to get a line in at all. When I arrived at the hospital I was rushed through to the CT Scanner and admitted back onto the ward. The next seven days were a blur of sleeping and vomiting but as my strength improved I begged to be allowed home, the doctors finally discharged me and I was allowed to go home to recover.
Recovery was slow, I was very weak and unable to stand or walk around. For the first few months I literally crawled on hands and knees from one room to the next. All I could do was sleep, eat and rest until I gained my strength back.
My recovery to full health took a couple of years, I say ‘full health’, but actually my left side is still mildly paralysed, and whilst I am not as bad as I was before the operation, the meningitis has left me with permanent problems. My doctor has listed all the problems I may suffer, but told me that surgical intervention should be held off until things become as bad as before, as it was my ‘last chance’ at a cure, and if I could live with my situation then I should.
It was then that I was told that due to all these problems I would have to face spending the rest of my life relying on disability benefits, and that I would never be fit enough to return to work. I am the type of person that if I am told that I can’t do something I feel like I need to prove them wrong. There was no way that I was going to spend the rest of my life doing nothing…. So I started to find ways that I could earn a living working within my limitations and on a very low budget of almost zero money. And that’s when Mystic Charms was born.
It wasn’t easy starting my own business, I had no money, just state benefits to survive on. I couldn’t obtain a loan or an overdraft from the bank and there was no business angel. With very little knowledge in web site creation I designed and launched my own web site, and managed to convince a few suppliers of the merit of my business idea so I had supplies. I knew nothing about marketing, book keeping etc but I didn’t let that stop me.
On the 1st March 2007 Mystic Charm went live and within two days I was taking orders. I had found an overlooked niche market and I had the necessary drive and determination in order to fill it. The rest, as they say, is history.
My business, Mystic Charms™, operates as a distributor for mystical and new age products for the Mind, Body and Spirit market. I process all orders, which I receive from my affiliate members who advertise my products and then I distribute the items to their customers. This removes all unnecessary storage, bulk buying from wholesalers and posting for my affiliate members.
From the very first day ‘Mystic Charms™’ has grown rapidly and has over 600 affiliate members throughout the UK and internationally. I now offer ecommerce web sites to members as well as premium rate psychic phone lines complete with psychic readers. I now offer package deals and ongoing assistance to all members.
I have now generated over £250,000 gross turnover, and am becoming an industry name. I have expanded my product range and earning opportunities, which now include Psychic premium rate phone lines, and a party plan and brochure side to the business and now employ three part time staff.
With Mystic Charm I have helped myself towards a secure future as well as inspiring hundreds of others to have a go. I now help people to start working towards the same goal of being self reliant or to increase their own income with a proven method of working from home. People inform me how my story has inspired them not to give in to life’s pressures and to aim for something more.
As for my health, well I am so involved in my business that I tend to forget I have problems. It is said that what you think about you get and I just don’t have time to think about being ill!!

Mystic Charms was set up in 2007 winning two prestigious business awards in 2008 and 2009.
